June 19th, 2011Making an Automobile Insurance Claim
There are few sounds more sickening than the crunch of glass and metal when two cars collide against each other. Even when the accident is a minor one and there is one harm done to either party, filing a claim with your insurance company and getting the vehicle repaired can seem very troublesome. This is the reason you purchased that automobile insurance, but still you may be concerned about getting it all taken care of in a timely manner.
The first thing to do is to notify your insurance company immediately. You should probably also call the police, especially if it’s more than a mere dent on the fender. The police will come out and be able to look at the site and establish liability without question, so that each car or auto insurance company knows who it is who should be paying. Be sure to note down the incidence number from the police so that you can give it to your insurance. If you need to, also write down exactly what happened so that your story will remain consistent any time you are questioned about it.
Ask your insurance company what procedure they need you to follow. Keep any and all documents related to it in a convenient spot, as well as the details of your cover. If you speak over the phone, write down what was said and when. All of this is to help you should your company try to deny your claim. Finally, take the car to a garage that has been approved by the company, and do not allow any repairs to take place until they agree to pay for them. Getting your vehicle repaired too quickly could result in the company refusing to pay. Be polite, but be persistent, and be prepared to recite from your insurance policy if you need to.
